Endocrine disruptors: an overview and discussion on issues surrounding their impact on marine animals
نویسندگان
چکیده
Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) are a growing concern because they are seriously harmful to wildlife both by direct damage to animals and through more subtle effects on growth, development and reproduction. In the past decades, there have been many studies about toxicological impact of EDCs on species. The NCBI Data-Base has amassed hundreds of research papers regarding the effects or mechanism of EDCs in marine animals. However, researchers still face new scientific challenges in some critical issues related to the understanding of EDCs and their effect on animals. Specifically, issues surrounding the selection of an appropriate model organism to document their effects, reconsidering biomarkers, and using “omics” technique to study the precise mechanism of EDCs warrant discussion. In addition, EDCs are now taken into account to partly explain the dwindling biodiversity of marine ecosystem. Yet, whether there exists a causal association between EDCs exposure and variety deterioration of species is still unknown. This review provides an in depth commentary on the issues mentioned above. Aquatic environments receive significant levels of chemical contaminants generated by human activities. Among these pollutants, we noticed the xenobiotics known as reproductive toxicants and endocrine disruptors. The endocrine disruption in wildlife has been the subject of many reviews and workshops in recent years. Field observations of reproductively abnormal organisms and population declines...
متن کاملEndocrine Disruptors in Domestic Animal Reproduction: A Clinical Issue?
The objective of this review was to discuss whether endocrine disruption is a clinical concern in domestic animal reproduction. To that end, we firstly summarize the phenomenon of endocrine disruption, giving examples of the agents of concern and their effects on the mammalian reproductive system. Then there is a brief overview of the literature on endocrine disruptors and domestic animal repro...

Endocrine disruptors (EDs) are a class of chemicals with the ability to interfere with the endocrine (hormonal) processes in mammals. Any hormonal process in the body can potentially be impacted by endocrine disruptors. As a result, EDs have been linked to many health related issues, such as learning disabilities, brain and cognitive development problems, breast cancer, deformations of limbs, f...
متن کاملEndocrine-disrupting compounds: a review of their challenge to sustainable and safe water supply and water reuse.
The relevance of endocrine-disrupting compounds as potential contaminants of drinking water is reviewed, particularly in the reuse of wastewater. Growing populations and increasing intensification of land and water use for industry and agriculture have increased the need to reclaim wastewater for reuse, including to supplement the drinking water supply. The variety of anthropogenic chemicals th...
